Walgreens is closing 450 stores

Is Downtown Atlanta’s 25 Peachtree Street one of them?

Atlanta, Georgia – Word is out that CVS’s biggest competitor is closing 450 of their locations… 150 in the states and 300 overseas in the UK.

A spokesperson for Walgreens shared with CNN that the reason behind the closings is to help with their cost-cutting efforts, “The chain operates almost 9,000 stores in the United States and expects to close the 150 US locations by the end of its next fiscal year, Aug 31, 2024.”

One of the Walgreens locations in question is downtown Atlanta’s 25 Peachtree Street. Downtown Atlanta is a food desert with no grocery store options in the area. The last grocery store located within the downtown area was located on Trinity Ave, a Kroger that has been closed for well over 23 years or more.

Earlier this year in February while looking up property records I discovered an ad offering the space for lease.

Upon further research, I discovered that downtown residents were protesting the closing of the Downtown Walgreens at 25 Peachtree Street. After receiving support for the petition, Walgreens decided to hold off on the closing.

Now today there are 150 U.S.-based stores up for closing. We tried contacting Walgreens’s corporate office to find out if 25 Peachtree Street is one of the locations. We weren’t able to get in contact with anyone, but as soon as we hear something back. We’ll update you all with the information on what direction Walgreens will be taking with 25 Peachtree.
