City Council votes unanimously in emergency session to lock the 22-year-old mayor out of city funds and offices.
Just months after making history as the youngest African American mayor elected in the state of Georgia, 22-year-old Stockbridge Mayor Jayden Williams is facing intense scrutiny over allegations of financial misconduct.
Following a tense, three-hour emergency closed-door meeting, the Stockbridge City Council voted unanimously (5-0) to temporarily strip Williams of his key administrative privileges and access to city property while an independent investigation into his conduct gets underway.
The sudden crackdown stems from staff suspicions within the finance department that Williams allegedly used city-issued purchasing cards for unauthorized personal expenses.
The Restrictions Placed on Mayor Williams
While the resolution allows Williams to technically retain his mayoral title and perform basic duties, the council’s strict administrative safeguards effectively lock him out of day-to-day city operations.
According to the approved resolution, Williams must surrender all city-issued property—including keys and access cards—and temporarily loses access to:
- City-issued purchasing cards (P-cards) and fuel cards.
- City-owned vehicles.
- Non-public areas of city facilities, meaning he is barred from operating out of the mayor’s office.
- Direct communication with city employees, which must now go strictly through the City Manager.
Furthermore, any future travel arrangements or spending requests involving the mayor must be explicitly authorized by the City Manager.
“Accountability” Over Wrongdoing
During the reading of the resolution, Mayor Pro Tem Elton Alexander noted that council members were acting on “considerable evidence” presented to the city manager, finance department, and city attorney.
“The city has determined that certain temporary administrative measures are necessary to protect city operations, safeguard city employees, and ensure appropriate stewardship of public resources,” Alexander stated during the meeting.
Despite the heavy restrictions, city leaders emphasize that this administrative pivot does not serve as a definitive finding of wrongdoing. The ultimate determination will rest with an independent investigator authorized by the city attorney to deep-dive into the mayor’s credit card statements and matching receipts.
Williams, a high-profile Clark Atlanta University graduate who ran on a platform heavily centered around accountability and inclusive growth, has not yet publicly commented on the investigation. The final independent findings are expected to dictate whether the council moves forward with formal removal procedures or restores the young mayor’s full authority.
