MARTA Launches NextGen Network and First BRT Line

A Generational Redesign of Bus Service and the Debut of Rapid Summerhill Connect the Region Like Never Before

This Saturday, April 18, 2026, marks the most significant shift in Atlanta’s public transportation landscape in over half a century. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is officially retiring its legacy bus system to launch the NextGen Bus Network, a ground-up reimagining of how the city moves. Accompanying this system-wide overhaul is the historic debut of MARTA Rapid Summerhill, the region’s first-ever Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line.

The NextGen Transformation

For the first time since the 1970s, MARTA has redrawn its entire bus map from scratch. Moving away from decades of incremental changes, the NextGen Network is designed to reflect the modern geography of where Atlantans live, work, and play today.

The cornerstone of this new operating system is a focus on High-Frequency Service. The network triples the number of “15-minute corridors”—routes where a bus arrives every 15 minutes or better—increasing from just five to 17.

“The NextGen Bus Network represents a generational transformation,” said Interim MARTA General Manager and CEO Jonathan Hunt. “Our goal is to deliver more access to more places in less time.”

Beyond frequency, the system introduces unprecedented consistency. Service levels will now remain nearly identical seven days a week, removing the drastic service drops typically seen on weekends and off-peak hours. The 81-route fixed system is bolstered by 12 MARTA Reach on-demand zones, ensuring curb-to-curb connectivity in lower-density areas.

MARTA Rapid: The Summerhill Era Begins

The crown jewel of this weekend’s launch is the opening of the MARTA Rapid Summerhill line (Rapid Line A). Connecting the Atlanta BeltLine to the South Downtown business district and MARTA’s heavy rail system, this 5-mile round-trip route introduces a new tier of transit to the city.

Unlike standard buses, the Summerhill BRT utilizes:

  • Dedicated Lanes: Protecting transit from the city’s notorious traffic congestion.
  • Transit Signal Priority: Technology that allows buses to communicate with traffic lights to stay on schedule.
  • Off-Board Fare Collection: Speeding up the boarding process at specialized stations.
  • Electric Fleet: The line will be serviced by zero-emission electric buses, offering a quieter, cleaner ride through the historic Summerhill neighborhood.

Running from the Georgia State University area down through the burgeoning creative and residential hubs of Summerhill and Peoplestown, Rapid Line A serves as the blueprint for future BRT corridors planned for the metro area.

The Impact on the Region

While the total number of routes has been streamlined, the strategic redesign has increased the number of people living within a quarter-mile of MARTA service by 6%. By prioritizing directness over winding legacy routes, MARTA is betting that a faster, more reliable “always-on” network will drive a new era of transit ridership in Atlanta.
