Hail to Atlanta’s New Home Run King: Decatur High Alum Jordan Walker Wins 2026 MLB Derby

St. Louis Cardinals star Jordan Walker powers past a hostile crowd to win $1M, becoming the first Georgia native to claim the Derby title since 1995.

PHILADELPHIA – Atlanta has a new home run king.

Facing a wall of boos at Citizens Bank Park, former Decatur High School standout and St. Louis Cardinals right fielder Jordan Walker put on a clutch performance to claim the 2026 MLB All-Star Home Run Derby crown.

Walker pulled off a historic rally against Philadelphia Phillies fan-favorite Kyle Schwarber in the final round, launching six consecutive home runs on his final six swings to secure a dramatic 12–11 comeback victory. The legendary finish crowned Walker as the first player in St. Louis Cardinals franchise history to win the event and officially established the DeKalb County native as Atlanta’s reigning home run royalty—the first Georgia native to win the Derby since Hall of Famer Frank Thomas in 1995.

Unfazed by the deafening boos of nearly 40,000 Phillies fans, the 24-year-old took the crowd’s energy in stride.

“I was once told you don’t boo nobodies,” Walker joked following his victory. “So, it feels pretty good.”

From Decatur High to Royalty at the Plate

Before establishing himself as the premier power hitter on baseball’s national stage, the new king was dominating local diamonds in DeKalb County.

During his high school career at Decatur High, Walker was a force at the plate, earning 2019-20 Gatorade Georgia Baseball Player of the Year honors. In his junior season with the Bulldogs, he hit .519 with 17 home runs and 60 RBIs, leading Decatur on a deep 5A state playoff run. After committing to Duke University, Walker entered professional baseball when the Cardinals drafted him 21st overall in the 2020 MLB Draft.

Even home run royalty takes notice. Following his historic performance, MLB’s career home run leader Barry Bonds gave Walker his official stamp of approval, telling the young star, “You got my trophy, too”.

“That means the world to me,” Walker said.

A $1M Payday and a Bigger Legacy

The crown came with a massive financial milestone. Winning the derby earned Walker a $1 million grand prize. Playing on his initial contract with a 2026 salary of $799,400, Walker effectively more than doubled his entire season’s income with six swings of the bat.

With his parents in attendance, the Decatur native made sure to use his crown to inspire the next generation of athletes back home and across the nation.

“I want to be a role model for the Black kids, you know, and I want more Black kids in baseball,” Walker told reporters. “Hopefully, this raises some awareness.”

The victory caps off a breakout first half of the 2026 season for Atlanta’s home run king, who is currently batting .294 with 22 home runs and 74 RBIs as he leads the Cardinals into the second half of the campaign.
