Atlanta Launches Massive ‘I’M SO ATL’ Public Art Campaign
Citywide Initiative Transforms 400 Parks Ahead of ARTlanta Festival of Culture
ATLANTA, GA — As the eyes of the international sports and entertainment worlds lock onto Atlanta for a historic summer, a massive citywide public art initiative is ensuring that homegrown culture takes center stage. Organizers behind I’M SO ATL have officially launched what is being called the most ambitious decentralized public art campaign in the city’s history, turning everyday public spaces into a living canvas.
In partnership with the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation, the initiative is actively installing large-scale public art pieces, visual activations, and pop-up musical performances across more than 400 area parks and neighborhood venues.
The three-phase campaign kicked off its first wave this month with marquee installations anchoring major regional hubs, including Piedmont Park, Grant Park, Shirley Clarke-Franklin Park, and Cleopas R. Johnson Park. Over the coming months, the public works will trickle down deeper into smaller neighborhood spaces and surrounding metro counties.
More Than a Festival: Art Where We Live
The campaign is spearheaded by the Atlanta Music, Arts, and Culture Foundation (AMAAC), a 501(c)(3) organization founded by cultural advocate J-Roc Barnes. Originally established in 2017 as the Hand Over Fist Foundation, AMAAC serves as a foundational platform helping local creatives navigate complex municipal permitting, branding, and career development.
Organizers emphasize that I’M SO ATL is fundamentally structured as a months-long civic activation rather than a standard commercial event, aiming to lower boundaries of access to high-caliber art.
“Our goal is to give as many artists as possible a platform while encouraging commerce through it,” Barnes noted, highlighting that the campaign directly aids artists through localized merchandising opportunities like prints, apparel, and collective exhibits. “Funding and commerce help these artists more than we realize.”
Parallel to the physical installations, a wide-reaching social media storytelling campaign is inviting lifelong residents and recent transplants alike to share their unique perspectives on what it truly means to be “SO ATL.”
The Climax: ARTlanta Festival of Culture
While the public art installations remain on display through November 2026, the entire summer campaign will build toward a flagship gathering at the heart of the city.
The free, three-day ARTlanta Festival of Culture will take over Piedmont Park from August 7 through August 9, 2026. Envisioned as a multi-genre, decentralized experience rather than a single-stage concert, the festival expects to draw an estimated 20,000 patrons per day.
Planned festival highlights include:
- Live mural painting and real-time audio beat-making showcases.
- Decentralized musical stages featuring hip-hop ensembles, salsa dancing, and live DJ sets.
- Dedicated independent film and television screenings.
- Immersive galleries covering graphic design, painting, and regional street photography.
