Voters question the exclusion of the State Senator from the 2026 Gubernatorial stage.

The Georgia gubernatorial race reached a fever pitch this week as 11Alive (WXIA) and Nexstar Media Group hosted a high-stakes televised debate on Wednesday night. While the event offered voters a deep dive into the platforms of three prominent contenders, the post-debate conversation has been dominated by a single question from frustrated viewers: Where was State Senator Jason Esteves?

The Three on Stage

The hour-long debate featured former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, former Republican Lieutenant Governor turned Democrat Geoff Duncan, and former DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond.

Moderated by anchors Zach Merchant and Faith Jessie, the trio navigated a range of pressing issues, including Medicaid expansion, the repeal of Georgia’s “heartbeat” abortion law, and the impact of federal immigration policies. The candidates largely found common ground in their opposition to the current administration’s stance on social issues, while differing on their specific executive approaches to public safety and tax relief.

The Exclusion of Jason Esteves

Despite the substantive discussion, the 11Alive Facebook page was quickly flooded with comments from supporters of Jason Esteves, a prominent State Senator and former Atlanta Public Schools Board member. Many followers expressed confusion and anger, questioning why a candidate with significant fundraising power and a seven-figure ad buy already under his belt was left out of the broadcast.

In response to the outcry, debate organizers pointed to “standardized, non-discriminatory participation criteria” established by 11Alive and Nexstar. To qualify for the stage, candidates were required to meet objective benchmarks, including:

While Esteves has been a vocal presence on the campaign trail—recently launching a “Black Men’s Agenda”—it appears he fell just short of the specific polling or fundraising metrics required by the media outlets for this particular event.

Voter Backlash

The explanation has done little to satisfy some corners of the Democratic base. On social media, critics argued that excluding a viable candidate like Esteves narrows the democratic process and deprives voters of a full perspective on the field.

“Jason Esteves is the only one in the race with a real plan for small businesses. Excluding him from this debate is a disservice to Georgia voters,” one commenter wrote on the 11Alive post. Others pointed out that with the primary rapidly approaching, these televised moments are critical for lesser-known candidates to gain the momentum needed to challenge established names like Bottoms and Thurmond.

As the May primary draws closer, the “three-man” dynamic of Wednesday’s debate has underscored the steep climb for challengers fighting to break into the top tier of a crowded and expensive race for the Governor’s Mansion.
