Atlanta’s Transit Evolution: Tap-to-Pay, New Orange Cards, and the Future of Commuting
Atlanta, Ga— Today marks a historic shift in how Atlanta moves. On this Saturday, March 28, 2026, MARTA has officially rolled out its long-awaited “Better Breeze” fare payment system. The modernization project, which has been months in the making, brings contactless “tap-to-pay” technology to the forefront, effectively giving every resident and visitor a modern “key to the city.”
The New Era: Open Payments and Orange Cards
The hallmark of the Better Breeze system is the introduction of Open Payments. For the first time, riders can bypass ticket vending machines entirely. By tapping any major contactless credit/debit card or a mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay) directly on the new faregates or the bright orange bus validators, commuters can board instantly.
For those who prefer a physical transit card, the new orange Breeze cards have replaced the classic silver ones. These new cards are account-based, meaning your fare is stored in a secure cloud account rather than on the physical chip of the card itself, allowing for easier balance protection and reloading.
Navigating the Transition
While the new system is live as of today, MARTA is implementing a five-week transition period to help riders adjust:
- March 28 – May 2, 2026: Both old and new systems will be active. You can still use remaining balances on your silver Breeze cards at “old” faregates.
- No More Reloads: As of today, old ticket vending machines have been powered down. You cannot add money to old silver cards or the Breeze Mobile 2.0 app.
- The “Same Key” Rule: To ensure your four free transfers remain valid, you must use the same payment method for your entire trip. If you tap in with a physical Visa card, you must tap out or transfer with that same physical card—not the digital version on your phone.

How to Get and Load Your New Better Breeze Card
Ready to upgrade? MARTA has streamlined the process through the new and improved BreezeCard.com.
1. How to Receive Your New Card:
- Online: Visit www.BreezeCard.com. You can order a new orange Breeze card directly to your home. (Note: Delivery typically takes 5–7 business days).
- In-Person: New cards are available today at all new touchscreen Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) located in MARTA stations, at MARTA Ride Stores, and at participating regional partner locations (CobbLinc, Ride Gwinnett, and Xpress).
- Mobile Option: Download the new Breeze Mobile app (available today on iOS and Android) to create a “Virtual Breeze Card” instantly on your phone.
2. How to Load and Manage Fare:
- Create an Account: Go to the “Sign Up” section on the website to register your new card. This protects your balance if the card is lost or stolen.
- Autoload: Within your account settings, you can set up “Autoload” to ensure you never run out of fare. You can choose to trigger a reload when your balance hits a certain dollar amount or at the start of a new month.
- Checking Balances: Use the website or the new mobile app to see real-time history of your taps and current account balance.
Note for Balance Transfers: If you have money left on an old silver card that you cannot finish by May 2, MARTA will open a balance transfer window from May 5 through October 30, 2026. You will need to have a registered account on the new website to facilitate this move.
