Art & Culture without breaking the bank
As we noted Monday in the previous piece how cheap it can be to eat at various nice eateries and food spots for less than $10. We are aiming to do the same with metro Atlanta’s arts community.
The local art scene doesn’t require deep pockets to appreciate as well. Various locations offers completely free admission to rotating exhibitions featuring local, national, and international artists. Museums actively pays emerging artists for new commissions, so you’re often seeing fresh work that’s never been displayed elsewhere.
Several of the city’s premier institutions offer free days that savvy locals know to mark on their calendars. The High Museum of Art opens its doors for free every second Sunday of the month from noon to 5 p.m., complete with special programming like art-making activities and performances
The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory charges just $8-10 for adults (free for ages 5 and younger), and their Sunday FUNdays feature free admission plus drop-in art studio activities. At Marietta Cobb Museum of Art, adult admission runs $10, with students paying $8 and kids 6 and younger entering free.
For an intimate art experience, visit Hammonds House Museum in the West End, Atlanta’s only fine arts museum specializing in art of the African Diaspora. Hammonds House offers free admission to Fulton County residents during Second Sundays of each month. Reguarly, adult admission is just $10 (students pay $5, seniors pay $7 and children 12 and under are free), and you’ll see works from renowned artists like Romare Bearden alongside emerging voices.
Do you like Chick-fil-A and college football? Perhaps you’ll be happy to know that you can receive free admission for two to Atlanta’s College Football Hall of Fame. As a sponsor of the musuem, Chick-fil-A is passing off some of their benefits to their customers by offering free entry to their “Red” and “Signature” members. Upon entry to the College Football Hall of Fame just show your member status on the Chick-fil-A app and walaa… Free entry for two. 😉
And finally… Don’t forget Atlanta’s incredible public art scene, which costs nothing to enjoy. The Atlanta BeltLine features the largest temporary outdoor art exhibition in the South, with stunning murals and installations along the 22-mile trail. Self-guided street art walks through areas like the Krog Street Tunnel, Decatur Artway, and various BeltLine sections offer hours of free cultural enrichment.
Friday we’ll be closing this feature with unique $10 experiences that you can enjoy over the weekend with our weekly Peach Pulse Series of events.
